Android Makes Health Records App to Boost Patient Data Access
September 12, 2019 – Android is taking a page – or rather an app – out of Apple’s book, working with experts from Cornell, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and The Commons Project to create its own user-facing smartphone app that would enable patient data access.
The project, dubbed CommonHealth, would also enlist the expertise of leaders from Sage Bionetworks and Open mHealth and aims to allow Android users to collect all of their medical information within one centralized smartphone app and then send that data to entities of their choosing.
This project significantly draws on the Apple Health Records tool that the fruit launched in April 2018.
“Apple has shown real leadership and moved the industry forward by enabling patient access to their health information. Now CommonHealth is significantly expanding the number of people who can benefit from easy electronic access to their health records,” said JP Pollak, the CommonHealth product lead, senior researcher in residence at Cornell Tech, and assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medicine.
